WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs August 19th – 21st

Posted on: Aug 16, 2016

The time has finally come. All of our blood, sweat, and tears have finally paid off! The Carolina Rollergirls are heading to the WFTDA Division 2 playoffs in Wichita, Kansas August 19th -21st. We have played against so many great teams this year which has helped us excel to another level of play. We have grown so much as a team and as individual players, pushing ourselves and each other to reach new heights of great derby athletics. This is our time to come together and play the sport we love with a passion and we dedicate our time and energy to. Through the support of our coaches, volunteers, NSO’s, and fans we thank you for helping us get this far. Wichita is a pretty far drive and we know many of you will not be able to join or cheer for us in person. You can watch us live from the WFTDA’s broadcast channel at WFTDA.tv here.

And just remember; WHO ARE WE? CRG!

CRG May 21st Double Header @ Raleigh Convention Center

Posted on: May 17, 2016

Hey there derby fans!

CRG has had an amazing start to the month with Out Raleigh, and we’re so excited to keep up the momentum with our upcoming May bout! If you’re a local fan, you’ll be happy to hear we’re having a double header home charity bout on Saturday, May 21st at the Raleigh Convention Center! This will be our 3rd time at the center and we’re feeling more and more excited about the new space.

At 5PM the Carolina Bootleggers will be taking on the Star City Rollergirls from Roanoke, VA, and at 7PM your own Carolina All Stars will be taking on the Carolina Hurticanes. We are so excited to be offering local beer, wine, and snacks, as well as face painting. Derby City Skates will also be making an appearance for all your skate and gear needs.
As in our bout in April, we will be collecting funds and supplies for Hope Animal Rescue in Durham, a local non-profit organization that finds happy homes for abandoned animals. A portion of our merchandise sales will be going to this great and worthwhile organization!

If you would like a ticket to the double header, feel free to purchase one here, or directly from a Carolina Rollergirl for $10. If you want to reach out to a rollergirl for the reduced rate, be sure to like our Facebook page, and make a post asking for tickets! We will also be selling tickets at the door for $15 general admission, $12 for students, seniors, and veterans, $5 for children ages 6-12, and free for children below age 5.

As always, if you’re interested in being a volunteer or NSO at the bout, please reach out to us here and we’d be thrilled to have you on board!

Don’t forget to come out and join us at the after party at Woody’s City Market right after the last bout to eat some good food, drink some yummy drinks, and talk derby with your favorite skaters! We love it when fans and community members show up at the after party so we can meet and get to know you all!

All the derby love,

Carolina Rollergirls

Inside Carolina Rollergirls’ Derby School

Posted on: Feb 11, 2016

“From now on, every girl in the world who might be a Slayer, will be a Slayer. Every girl who could have the power, will have the power, who can stand up, will stand up. Slayers… every one of us. Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?”–Buffy Summers

The most noticeable thing in the Carolina Rollergirls Chop Shop on the first night of Derby School was the air.  You felt it even without any of your other senses.  When you closed your eyes to the scrambling of women figuring out their new gear, and your ears to the sounds of 17 right feet scraping down on their first few T-stops, you still felt something different in the cool February air.  It was an eager excitement permeating both from the CRG skaters and the new skaters who had come for the first day of Derby School, CRG’s new skater training program.

These women have committed to 8 weeks of training with CRG in order to learn WFTDA minimum skills and attempt their level 1 assessments to go on to learn the ins and outs of roller derby. Over the course of 2 hours, the skaters tried out off-skates skills, pace line skating, weaving, T- and plow stops, and many other skills.  They got to know each other and got to know CRG assessors and skaters. They came from all different backgrounds, and in looking around the warehouse last night I saw women of all different ages, shapes, and skill levels.  What they had in common was their desire to become a part of something bigger together.

So that’s why the sense of something important was so powerful in the Chop Shop last night.  It was powerful because it wasn’t just the excitement of the new Derby School students…It was the excitement of all of CRG as we roll out this first of 3 Derby School sessions this year.  We are excited to expand further in the community, to welcome and get to know new skaters, to enrich our process as a league, and to advocate for the presence of local derby in the Triangle.  We’re excited to fall and get back up again and become stronger personally and as a team.  We’re excited to teach and learn and grow together in 2016.

If you or anyone you know is interested in Derby School with CRG, let us know!  Email joinus@carolinarollergirls.com or register here.
