How did you find derby?: I found derby at 43, as my 20 year marriage was falling apart. I was out of shape and feeling terribly about myself. I told a friend, as I was starting to work out more, that I wish I had a team sport, and she asked me if I'd ever seen roller derby and lent me her DVD of Whip It. I was interested, and started skating at a local rink with my daughter and my friend and her kids. I went to a bout at Dorton a few weeks later, and was hooked. I got up the courage to come to an open practice (having skated exactly 4 times in the previous 20 years) and found that everyone was welcoming and supportive, and approached me with the attitude that I could do this -- so I believed them and kept coming. My then-husband was very discouraging of my interest in the sport, and before we broke up, I injured myself in an open skate, but I persevered through both the divorce and the recovery from the injury to pass my 2nd tryout in July 2015 and become fresh meat.
Sports Background: I ice skated when I was a kid, and rollerbladed around my college campus in the early 90s. I played little league and college/grad school intramural softball and still play in a local rec league. I played quarterback and defensive line in powderpuff football games in high school. I have always loved weight-lifting and I am enjoying some informal boxing training right now.
Best Fresh Meat Moment: So far, passing tryouts...but I'm sure the best is yet to come!
Favorite Derby Memory: My best friend is an artist and she draws on my helmets for me. I remember at one of my earliest practices, Q was coaching the newbies and didn't know my name, so for an hour-long speed practice and a 2-hour long open practice I was just "Fancy Helmet." I remember her yelling out that she liked my determination when we were skating carpet laps, and I think back to that practice as a point when I felt like, "Hey...I can really do this." And I still wear a fancy helmet.
Likes: American history, dogs, gardening, all the crafts in the world ever, super hero movies, football, playing guitar, photography, and working out.
Dislikes: Celery, raw onion, mean people.
Derby Heroes: Bloody Mary (Texas), Hauss the Boss (Texas), Suzy Hotrod (Gotham), Scald Eagle (Rose), Stefanie Mainey (London), Roxy Rockett, Ava Gore, Lil Rosie Rotten (Boston)
Name Inspiration: My daughter is a huge Harry Potter fan and the Sorting Hat has squarely placed me in Hufflepuff. So Scufflepuff is a riff on that. Anyone who doubts that Hufflepuffs can kick butt need look no further than Tonks.
If you could have any super power, what would it be? Jedi mind control.
